Sindoor khela by Bengali women during Dussehra~

What has always fasinated me since childhood, is the happey fervour on Dashami, when married women put sindoor on each other as a joyous display of their happy marital status. This is a traditional celebration especially with Bengali women.

Sindoor, or vermilion, holds significant cultural and religious importance in many Hindu traditions, especially during festivals like Dussehra.

Here are some key points about its significance during this time:

*Symbol of Auspiciousness: Sindoor is often associated with married women in Hindu culture. It symbolizes marital bliss, prosperity, and the well-being of husbands.

*Offerings to Goddess Durga: During Dussehra, which celebrates the victory of Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura, sindoor is offered to the goddess as a mark of respect and devotion. It is believed that applying sindoor brings blessings and protection.

*Sindoor Khela: In some regions, particularly in West Bengal, there is a tradition called "Sindoor Khela." On the last day of Durga Puja, married women apply sindoor on each other and on the idol of the goddess, celebrating womanhood and the divine feminine.

*Festive Celebrations: The use of sindoor adds to the festive atmosphere. Women dress in traditional attire, often with sindoor prominently displayed, highlighting the joy and vibrancy of the festival.

*Cultural Identity: Sindoor during Dussehra also reinforces cultural identity and community bonding, as people come together to celebrate and participate in rituals.

Overall, sindoor during Dussehra embodies devotion, celebration, and the richness of cultural traditions in Hindu society.
