The name “Jolly Grant” actually comes from the village of Jolly Grant, located near the airport site about 25 km southeast of Dehradun. The word “Grant” refers to a land grant given during the British colonial era. The area was part of estates or land allotments (grants) made by the British administration to local families or institutions. “Jolly” is believed to have been either the name of a British official/landholder associated with this region or a family name tied to the land grant records. Over time, the locality came to be known as Jolly Grant village. When the airport was built in the 1970s–80s, it naturally inherited the name from the village where it was established.
